Netflix’s 2024 K-drama lineup update announces the return of certain characters for Sweet Home season 3, offering insights into the direction of the show. Described as a “grand finale” by Netflix, the upcoming season, slated for a 2024 premiere, is anticipated to bring resolution to the numerous cliffhangers left at the end of season 2. This forthcoming installment promises to deliver answers to lingering questions and an abundance of action, potentially marking the conclusion of the series.

Season 2 of Sweet Home saw a significant expansion of its cast, with numerous new characters introduced both before and after the time skip. While the decision to introduce multiple new faces and shift focus away from the original characters was a risk, these newcomers ultimately helped to broaden the show’s scope. The first glimpse of Sweet Home 3 offers insights into which characters will take on major roles in the upcoming season and hints at the challenges they will face.

Sweet Home Season 3 returning cast

  • Lee Eun-hyeok (Lee Do-hyun)
At the conclusion of Sweet Home season 2, it was revealed that Eun-hyeok is alive. Lee Do-hyun’s character chose to stay behind during the finale of season 1 and was trapped inside the collapsing Green Home building, leaving his fate uncertain. Just before the structure collapsed, Eun-hyeok was shown bleeding from his nose, hinting at a possible transformation into a monster. Now, the official synopsis for Sweet Home season 3 confirms that Eun-hyeok was ensnared inside a monster cocoon, indicating a new stage in the curse’s evolution. Whether Eun-hyeok has turned to evil remains to be seen.
  • Cha Hyun-su (Song Kang)
    Hyun-su’s journey continues
Song Kang’s character, Hyun-su, had limited screen time in Sweet Home season 2, drawing some criticism. However, he made a comeback towards the end of the season and is now reunited with Eun-yu. Having learned about Ji-su and the others, Hyun-su is now fully aware of the series’ events and could play a more central role in the main storyline. The finale of season 2 depicted Hyun-su’s monstrous side taking control, raising concerns due to his growing power. Season 3 may delve into Hyun-su’s internal battle to control his monstrous self.
  • Pyeon Sang-wook (Lee Jin-wook)
    Sang-wook is not really Sang-wook
While Lee Jin-wook’s character is officially referred to as Pyeon Sang-wook in cast guides and reference materials, Sang-wook met his demise during the finale of season 1. In reality, Lee Jin-wook portrays Ui-myeong, who currently inhabits Sang-wook’s body. Ui-myeong’s true identity is not Sang-wook but rather Sang-won, Yi-kyung’s missing fiancé, who was subjected to government experiments and now seeks to establish a world dominated by neo-humans. He is presently overseeing experiments in a clandestine laboratory.
  • Seo Yi-kyung (Lee Si-young)
Yi-kyung didn’t die in Sweet Home season 2
One of the most unexpected updates for Sweet Home season 3 is the return of Lee Si-young, indicating that Yi-kyung did not meet her demise at the end of season 2. In the previous season’s finale, viewers witnessed Hyun-su engaged in a battle with Yi-kyung, who had been resurrected by her daughter but in a monstrous form. Although Yi-kyung’s transformation was incomplete, leaving her part human and part monster, it appeared in the finale of season 2 that she had perished following the confrontation. However, this is not the case, as the character is set to make a comeback in season 3.
  • Lee Eun-yu (Go Min-si)
Eun-yu will reunite with her brother
Eun-yu in Sweet Home season 2, episode 4
Throughout Sweet Home season 2, Eun-yu tirelessly searched for her brother, clinging to the hope that he was still alive somewhere. Go Min-si’s character, Eun-yu, believed that Eun-hyeok was watching over her from the shadows, a belief that was only partly accurate. While Eun-hyeok was indeed alive, it was actually Hyun-su who had been protecting Eun-yu all along. Despite this, one of the initial official images from Sweet Home season 3 depicts Eun-hyeok, Eun-yu, and Hyun-su walking together, confirming the long-awaited reunion of the siblings. However, the image carries a somewhat ominous undertone, suggesting that this reunion may not unfold as a joyous one.
  • Private Park Chan-yeong (Jinyoung)
Chang-yeong is returning to the stadium
Park Chan-yeong, portrayed by Jinyoung, was introduced as one of the new characters in Sweet Home season 2. He quickly formed a bond with the original protagonists of the show, particularly Eun-yu, after assisting them in their journey from the Green Home to the stadium. However, their troubles escalated after they embarked on a quest together. Now, it has been confirmed that Chan-yeong will make a return to the stadium in season 3. With many of his friends perished and a looming crisis about to erupt in the stadium, Chan-yeong is in for an unexpected turn of events.
  • The Girl (Kim Si-a)
The return of “the Girl,” Sweet Home’s enigmatic monster child, in season 3 brings with it a reminder of her immense power. Capable of transforming others into monsters merely by touch and exerting control over their actions thereafter, she stands out as the most formidable character in the series. Additionally, her ability to read minds adds another dimension to her strength. It’s conceivable that the Girl’s powers hold the potential to unravel the mysteries surrounding the curse and perhaps even bring about its resolution. The direction she chooses to utilize her abilities in season 3 will undoubtedly be intriguing to witness.
  • Master Sergeant Tak In-hwan (Yoo Oh-seong)
Sergeant Tak emerges as one of the enigmatic figures in Sweet Home, transitioning from an initially perceived ruthless military figure to a nuanced leader concealing a significant secret from the group. Tasked with maintaining peace and order within the stadium, Tak grapples with inner conflicts, demonstrating reluctance towards killing monsters yet displaying a readiness to make sacrifices to uphold stability. However, the revelation of Tak’s infection at the conclusion of season 2 adds a new layer of complexity. The question of whether Tak will undergo transformation in season 3 becomes pivotal, potentially shaping the destiny of the stadium and its inhabitants.
  • Dr. Lim (Oh Jung-se)
Dr. Lim, introduced in season 2, has emerged as a pivotal figure in the Sweet Home universe. With his expertise, he appears to be the sole individual capable of developing a vaccine or cure for the curse. However, instead of prioritizing this task, Dr. Lim exhibits a keen interest in observing the extent of the monster cycle’s evolution. Season 3 is poised to delve into this aspect further, particularly after Dr. Lim’s recent discovery of the monsters’ evolving nature. Nevertheless, the scientist finds himself in a precarious situation as a prisoner of Ui-myeong, who was once a test subject during the outbreak. Dr. Lim may now be compelled to work under Ui-myeong’s influence, adding another layer of complexity to the unfolding narrative.
  • Sergeant Kim Yeong-hu (Kim Moo-yeol)
Sergeant Kim led his platoon outside in a quest to recover remnants of Dr. Lim’s research, aiming to facilitate the creation of a vaccine on a broader scale. Tragically, most of Sergeant Kim’s men perished during the mission, and Dr. Lim was abducted. The synopsis for Sweet Home season 3 reveals that Yeong-hu will not immediately return to the stadium but will instead persist in seeking answers in the outside world. His journey leads him to Bamseom, where the introduction of new characters is anticipated.
The Plot

In the upcoming season 3 of Sweet Home, the storyline will bring back the compelling narrative of Song Kang’s character, Hyun-su, who was notably absent for much of season 2. Amidst the expansive cast, it’s easy to overlook that the show initially revolved around Hyun-su, a character deeply affected by personal tragedy. He was the inaugural documented case of a special infectee, or neo-human, in Sweet Home, grappling with a curse that never fully transformed him into a monster.

Over time, Hyun-su has honed his abilities, using his monster powers strategically, even fashioning weapons from parts of his body. However, this comes with the constant struggle of keeping his monstrous side in check. Song Kang’s portrayal allows him to embody two distinct facets of Hyun-su, one representing the character’s darker inclinations.
